Climate Action Needed as Heavy Rains Cause Flooding Across Ghana

· July 08, 2026

Heavy rainfall has triggered severe flooding across several communities, particularly in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Western Regions. The intense deluge has displaced thousands of residents, submerged roads and farmlands, and cut off parts of the capital due to blocked drainage systems. Emergency authorities have urged residents in high-risk areas to seek shelter on safer, higher ground.

According to the Ghana Meteorological Agency, some areas have recorded up to 200mm of rain in a single day. Experts note that while the wet season is prolonged, the crisis is severely worsened by deforestation and inadequate drainage networks.

While government emergency teams are actively providing relief, this situation highlights Ghana’s growing vulnerability to climate change. Moving forward, the focus must shift toward long-term solutions, including climate-resilient infrastructure and improved community preparedness to protect lives and livelihoods.
