Standing Together: Addressing the Rise of Bullying in Senior High Schools

· July 08, 2026

A worrying surge in harassment and bullying incidents among Senior High School students is raising serious concerns about student safety and well-being. Reports from schools across the Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions reveal that students are facing verbal, physical, and relentless cyberbullying over their backgrounds and academic performance, driving some to experience severe emotional distress.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has acknowledged the issue, noting that responses have often been too slow and inconsistent. "We need stronger policies and better enforcement to protect students," a spokesperson stated.

To combat this, educators and administrators are calling for a proactive approach. While some schools have introduced peer support groups, a nationwide effort is required. True change will take collaboration between the government, schools, and parents to enforce strict anti-bullying programs, increase supervision, and provide the vital mental health counseling students need to feel safe.
