"Football Doesn’t Work Like That" — Jordan Ayew Reflects on Colombia Defeat and Calls for Patience with New Manager

· July 05, 2026

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has spoken for the first time following Ghana's World Cup defeat to Colombia, attributing the team's performance to the ongoing transition under their new manager.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sporty TV, monitored by GH Page, the skipper explained that the squad is still actively adjusting to a new tactical system implemented just two months before the tournament.

According to Ayew, adapting to a complete change in leadership and playstyle requires time, which the team did not fully have ahead of the global showpiece.

"We have a new manager; he just came two months ago trying to install his style, and people are adjusting," Ayew stated. "You don’t adjust within one month or two months; football doesn’t work like that."

Despite the setback, the captain firmly defended the coach, clarifying that the defeat should not be blamed on the manager's capabilities, whom he described as one of the best.

"The manager needs time; he’s a very good manager," Ayew added.

Looking at the team's performance on the pitch, Ayew pointed out that while there were clear signs of structural progress, the team still has work to do to compete at the highest level.

"You could see that defensively, we were better, but we fell short a bit offensively, so we have to find the right balance," he concluded.
